My 97 year old mom refuses to wear incontinence pads.

She is messing in the bed and the floor, her carer is despairing of her. What can I do?

Throw her underwear out and put depends in all of her drawers where her undies used to be. Then you tell her straight up that she either wears them or she will need to go into a home.

Is she refusing because she won't give up underwear? If so, throw out all her underwear and only provide disposable pull-ups.

If she's not on meds for agitation, maybe have this discussion with her doctor. This might help her be compliant.

If she is refusing any under garment, then consider adaptive clothing for people with dementia: they cannot be removed by the wearer. Once you can get a disposable on her then at least she won't be able to get it off without help.

Or, maybe it's time to consider placement in a good, reputable facility.
