I used one in hospital this time until I was allowed out of bed and found it to be a godsend. It does take a bit of time to learn to "let it go" as you have a feeling you are peeing in bed; once you are able to use it, it's great, but as is said below, you need to be on your back and not moving around.
I would say that this method is good only for those without dementia, in all truth as it requires your body being correctly and purposely positioned. I had a friend who used it for hip surgery because getting out of bed to bathroom required two braces being applied to her limbs. Given the amounts of IV fluids we are given hospitalized there isn't a whole lot of time to waste on all that.
So again, depends on the person's ability to understand the apparatus, I would say. In the severely demented, unless bedbound and completely immobile, I doubt this is an answer.
My daughter who is a nurse in a teaching hospital despises PureWick. She swears they always leak no matter what and all her coworkers don’t like them either. That said, I have no personal experience with it

The hardest part was the first night she couldn't go. She was begging to use the commode. Psychologically everything was telling her you just don't pee while you're in bed! But once the floodgates opened it was no problem and she was grateful to have had it.

I have heard one success story and one only and that is a woman who had hip surgery, and who had urgency. She had to put on braces before making her way to the bathroom and had nighttime frequency. She used this after her hip surgery for about a month before she was able to get more up and about more quickly and more easily.
