Can we help pets after we pass on?

I worry about when a senior passes on what happens to their pet. Put to sleep by animal control. What if we had a "PETSAVE" system where a friend or relative takes prearranged ownership after the owner passes.

The shelters around me are no kill shelters. They do all they can to adopt out the animals. Fostering them when its overcrowded. All have a Facebook page where they put up pictures of the adoptees.

That's what many people do. They arrange for friend or relative to take care of pets when they pass. Others make no arrangements at all, and that's the saddest. Those are the ones that usually end up in a shelter.

My DD will gladly take in our pug if we cannot care for her, and her BF is next on the list. That was important for us to be sure of, and they both gladly agreed. Our small feral colony will probably be referred to the TNR that helped us get them all fixed and ear tipped. We donate nicely to them and they don't want them stranded.

My humane society offers to donors that they will take the pet in and prioritize if for adoption if medically and behaviorally ok

Why would you NOT have such a thing? I would be certain, if you are leaving Trust funds for care of pet that you make certain this person wants the pet and wants to care for it. Otherwise there is no way to predict (and ultimately there isn't) whether they keep the pet and care for it and love it.

This is why I did Not get a dog This winter. I realized the dog could Possibly Outlive me . Or if I had a heart attack who would Know the dog was alone .

This is a concern of mine for my future life. Never been without a cat in my life but I worry about having one when I am elderly. At this point (I'm 57) if I got a new cat I would get an older one.

That's usually what happens.

That is not what usually happens.

Dogs are accessed and put up for adoption, or treated medically, treated socially and then put up for adoption.

Only dogs that can not survive are euthanized.
