How do I transfer to Assisted Living with no funds saved?

I have a senior who did not plan ahead for future assisted living & she has no money set aside in savings, either. She needs to be transferred soon, but does not have enough in income to live in an assisted living facility and no where else to go. All family is deceased.

Some assisted living facilities do have a limited number of Medicaid beds available, but not all, so you'll have to work with a social worker to find out which facilities in this persons area have Medicaid beds.

Yes, contact social services for her county and make an appointment for them to come to assess her.

Contact adult protective services and get a needs assessment done for her. If she medically qualifies for nursing home care, that is where she needs to go, paid by LTC Medicaid. Even if she doesn’t medically qualify at this time, she should have a social worker assigned to her to find the right resources for her and to monitor her well being.

She will be taken in the guardianship of the state to manage her affairs. They will apply for Medicaid for her and she will go to a nursing home that accepts Medicaid, not to an ALF, as MOST of them do not accept government funds. They are privately owned (usually by corporations or hedgefunds ) facilities.

Without saving a lifetime the options for end of life care are not good. Often even LTC insurance doesn't give enough monthly income to afford ALF care.

She will need to apply for Medicaid and go into Longterm Care.
