My ex-husband and I have a disabled daughter that I care for. Now that he is deceased, can I collect on his social security benefits?
My ex-husband was killed in a mining accident. We had a disabled daughter but we were only married for 7 years. Since we had a disabled child that I was taking care of, should I be able to get benefits from his social security?
How old is your child. If under 18, yes child is entitled to his SS. But if over 18, you should be going for Social Security Disability. Your husbands earnings will be considered. As said, if over 18, you should be able to get Suppliment Security Income (SSI). With that comes Medicaid.
If you have not done it, you need to talk to your County Disabilities Dept and see what resourses are available to you. Also, Social Services for SSI and Social Security for SSD.
Call SS for guidance on applying for disability for your daughter if she may be eligible. She may alternately be eligible for SS supplemental security income, which is currently a bit over $900/month
This is definitely a question for Social Security itself. I don't know anyone on AC who is an expert in benefits. Igloo certain comes closest and I hope she is around. Meanwhile I will refer you to SS phone system. You will be on hold a long time, BUT I have found in past years that they are kind and efficient when finally I get them.
I want to welcome you to the Forum. Please fill out your profile as any questions you ask us will be helped by knowing a bit about you and the people you are caring for. For instance, how long ago were you married; when were you divorced; did he remarry; is your disabled child still living with you; is your child now age of maturity; what benefits did you get for your child in past and etc.

Spousal benefit, survivor benefit, survivor child in care benefit, or disability benefit.
The spousal benefit, if I recall correctly, requires ten years of marriage, but child in care is only one year.
If you like podcasts, see if you can find the right episodes of “The Retirement and IRA Show“ and you can listen to them dive deep into the details.

I would think your daughter should be getting something.
