Question about ALS.

My son-n-law is 51 years old and has ALS. Would this apply to him thru AgingCare? He is not yet considered a senior.

Grandma1954 Nov 2023
If he is a Veteran, (I am guessing his time of service might have been in the early 1990's). If that is the case and he were deployed in the Middle East he may qualify for help from the VA.
Veterans are 2X more likely to develop ALS than people that did not serve in the military.
So if your Ex was in the service please start your search with the Veterans Assistance Commission, the VA or the VFW.

My Counties Office of Aging is also for disabled people. I see no reason why your SiL could not take advantage of resources they may have. He may also be able to take advantage of Medicaid if he is in need of "in home" help. If there is a website for ALS, I would look into it. It may have resource info he can use.

I want to make sure he has applied for SSDI and that he's go often enrolled in Medicare:

"Are you eligible for Medicare if you have ALS?
If you have been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, you are eligible for automatic enrollment into Medicare the first month you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or a railroad disability annuity check.

"and that he's gotten enrolled in Medicare".

Auto-correct is the bane of my existence.

I am so sorry to hear of this dire diagnosis.l
I am uncertain what you mean about "would this apply to him".
Would what apply to him specifically. Are you speaking of a caregiver forum in general or do you have a specific question?

You may find more ALS focused support from the ALS Association forums

People can join AARP at a lower age. There isn’t a specific age limit for this forum.

What’s on your mind? I’m sure that posters will try to help you. You are interested in being a caregiver and need information.

Penny, welcome!

This is a forum for caregivers: I think you will find good support here if you and your family are taking care of someone with a serious, chronic illness.
