A spouse has senile dementia, the other spouse is primary caregiver. What determines when it is time to place the spouse in a facility?

I just read your profile.

You are 83 and your spouse is 98! You say that you are his caregiver and that you do have some help. I am glad that you have some assistance.

According to your profile, your husband seems to be somewhat contrary with your friends and family. That will certainly take a toll on you.

If you find yourself so exhausted that you can’t go anymore, please consider placement. You can visit as his wife and not have the responsibility of being a full time caregiver.

You will still be involved in his care by overseeing that he is cared for properly.

Wishing you peace as you decide on what is best for you and your family.

I based decisions on SAFETY.
If it was no longer safe for HIM for me to care for him I would have had to place my Husband in memory Care
If it was no longer safe for ME to care for him I would have had to place him.

Safety is not just physical safety but mental, emotional safety as well.

Now if the "problems" can be addressed by hiring caregivers that is a great option.

but if the primary caregiver feels that they can no longer care for the person then that is the time to place them in Memory Care.

When spouse who's doing the primary caregiving feels like they can no longer handle the job.
