Is there a service like this?

Hi there, as my parents age, I'm wondering if there's a service that will simply call them to check in on them, ask them about their day, etc.

Of course, I call them as often as I can, but getting some other people to check in would be nice as well.

Do you know if such a service exists? I'm having trouble finding one.

I called the AARP number from the web site given by Alvladeer and got a call back. They said this was the site to find more information on local help available: www.local.aarpfoundation.org. But this URL goes nowhere. They also referred me to care.com, but you have to put in your address, which I didn't want to do.
Does anyone have a URL for this local AARP site with help (the first one above)?
Thanks.

I sure do thank you for posting about that number. It is looking like they may not be a whole lot of help so far. I will stop suggesting people call that number if I hear anything else negative, I guess. Thanks again for the update.

AARP magazine has posted a new number this month that uses volunteers to answer questions about services in your community. They say you call, and leave contact number. A volunteer will return your call and connect you to local services and organizations that might help. Free call, so worth a try. The number is 888-281-0145.

This whole service is new to me. If you call I would love to see an update from you as to whether they were helpful at all or not.

In our area the Senior Center has volunteers that visit local seniors on a regular basis. It's done by volunteers so it is mostly limited to the vulnerable. It would be nice if we had such a paid service available to all, but we have rather limited services available (no adult daycare center in our county, for instance).

I know that in my area we have what's called The Shepherd Center and they have volunteers that will not only visit with elderly folks in their homes but also make phone calls to chat with them.
You can contact your local Senior Services or Area Agency on Aging to see if such a program is available in your area.

Thank you so much for this question! At the beginning of the pandemic, I think there might have been such a service locally; not sure it still exists. I see this service for other areas of my state, so I will be sending some emails and doing more research for my area.

I know there is always a need for in-person volunteers (Meals on Wheels delivery), but I am only interested in doing telephone (or virtual) volunteering.

I think she means Google "Friendly Calls Program" in your area code or city for these types of services you seek. 😁 Lots came up when I did a Google search.
