I live in Pickerington, Ohio and need to have an eye exam. Any idea where I can start my search?

When I called my optometrist office I was told they don’t have a way to accommodate people who can not stand or walk and are confined to a wheelchair. I am sure there is a way. Where can I go to find an optometrist who can accommodate me?

Cincinnati Eye Institute can accommodate, and they have several locations.

Maybe its an old building. May be grandfathered in when it comes to hallways and doorways. It would mean a whole renovation to comply. Maybe dentist rents so then its up to the landlord to comply.

Office of Aging in my County includes disabilities. I would try them. Maybe Dr. trying to get away with something. Really, its not up to him or his employees to risk hurting themselves helping you to transfer and not his responsibility to supply an aide that can. I agree, that you may need to take someone with you to help u in and out of the chair. That would be a question to ask. I have a feeling, though, that the doorways are not wide enough to get a wheelchair thru.

Call nursing homes around you to find out Optometrists that come in there for their residents.

What happened to the Americans with Disabilities Act? I thought businesses and practices were required to be handicapped accessible. Try calling the responsible regulatory agency where you live and file a complaint of noncompliance.

Where I used to live, there were people who took it upon themselves to check businesses and public places to make sure that they were in line with the current regulations. This resulted in fines and structural changes.

Fawnby, small businesses with a certain number of employees are exempt from some federal requirements.

Accessible doesn't mean having to help transfer a patient. This is totally on the individual that needs that kind of assistance.

I had a deaf person try this on my small business, they were angry that I didn't have to hire them and hire a bilingual interpreter so they didn't get killed on my job.

Have you called the OSU Optometry clinic in Pickering?

Also, call the local Area Agency on Aging and ask what resources they have.

Do you have an aid that can move you from the wheelchair to the exam chair?

If not, call a local agency and find out if you can hire someone for a day.
