My brother changed my mother's beneficiary to himself without anyone knowing, she died and he will not pay for her funeral expenses. Is this legal?
I had the policy turned over to the funeral home several years before her death. She has died but now he won't sign over the policy to pay for burial. This is happening in the state of New Jersey.
If you turned over the policy to the funeral home, were they not made beneficiary? If so, brother had no right to change it even if POA. I am surprised the insurance company allowed it.

When my Mom went on Medicaid, I had to cash in the two small policies she had. The money was placed in a funeral trust that the state Medicaid of NJ allowed.
Your brother cannot make himself beneficiary. If it appears that way, it is very likely illegal. Let the funeral home to after your brother since they were holding the policy. Do not, you personally, pay one dime of the cost!
