I am my mom's caregiver and live with her. I am considering taking over her lease. Does anyone have experience with this?

Mom (93) has lived in her apartment for 20 years. I have been staying with her for the past year and half and I take care of her. She shows signs of confusion and some early slight dementia.
I am considering taking over her lease before she starts declining.

You, or a landlord/tenant attorney needs to read the lease to determine if it can be assigned.  If not, I don't know how you could "take it over."

check with the landlord on this, particularly if there is strong rent control.

Why?

Is it year-to-year? How long of a commitment?

Is the apartment a place you’d like to live when mom isn’t there any longer? As an apartment has no ownership you should be able to lease it as anyone could.

Experience in taking over a lease? Have you spoken to her landlord?
