My mother has dementia, uses a walker and keeps falling. What can I do? Perhaps get her a wheelchair?

My mother's vision is the main reason why she is falling frequently. She has poor depth perception. I think that because of her vision being off is the reason why she keeps falling. I can only think that maybe a wheelchair would be a better option for her.

If she has dementia, and therefore forgets she shouldn't get up and try to walk, then you will then have to figure out how to keep her in the wheelchair, as it is illegal to restrain someone. You can purchase food trays that attach to the front of wheelchairs, and if she doesn't figure out how to remove it herself, may legally keep her in place. Having a tray top in front of her will also be handy.

The falls are an awful part of aging for so many. With poor vision it’s even worse. I’m surprised your mom’s NH hasn’t suggested using a wheelchair, I’d think it’d be a kindness to her

Yes, get her a wheelchair.

Not everyone ends up in awheelchair due to some catastrophic event. Some, like my mother, end up in one because one day it was decided that she could be gotten from Point A to Point B faster and far more safely in a wheelchair than by struggling with a walker. She, too, had vision issues (macular degeneration) and dementia, plus I'd just moved her to a memory care place. On the third day there she got out of bed, fell and ended up with 28 stitches in her forehead.

That was the last day she tried to walk anywhere, and she was much better off in her wheelchair and much less fearful.
