Why can't my mom wake up from sleep? What is happening to her?

She is 85 years old. Recently she has been sleeping long hours and cannot wake up no matter what I do (e.g., shake her body, massage her toe). Her vital signs were all ok. I will continue trying to wake her up every half hour until she wakes up.

My 96 year old Mom has days in which she sleeps a lot and I don't try to wake her. Then she has days where she wakes up at 7:00 a.m. and stays up until late afternoon and she takes a nap.

She tells me she's bored so we watch game shows together or play cards in the afternoon. I first thought she was going through end of lie as well but it's just not her time yet.

Does your Mom have any infections (i.e.: UTI, etc.?). I thought the worse when it wasn't the worse so this could be a passing thing.

Best to you,
Jenna

It sounds like it may be time to get hospice involved, as sleeping a lot can be a sign that death is near as cwillie said below.
My husband slept anywhere from 18-20 hours a day the last 6 months or so of his life, and he was under hospice care the last 22 months of his life.
They will be better to answer any questions you may have at this point.
Also my husbands vitals were all normal the better part of his 6 week dying process, so I'm not sure that you can really rely on that.
I wish you and your mom the very best.
