Other than a bed pan, what can you use for an elder who cannot hold their feces?

JoAnn29 Mar 2021
Your profile says the person is in Independent living or is it living independently?

First I would ask if they drink coffee or apple juice. If so, I would stop them. Both did a number on my Mom. Do they take laxatives, if so stop them. Drs and nurses seem to think you need to go everyday. Yes, and use pull ups. My Mom loved them.

I guess if your asking about a bedpan, the person is bedbound? Bedpans look so uncomfortable. I can imagine trying to use one. If the person can get out of bed, I would say putting them on the toilet after meals. If they are regular, you can guess about when.

Of course make sure they are wearing diapers at all times, and even if they're bedridden,(or not) you can still have someone put them on the bedside commode as needed, as that is much more comfortable than a bedpan. My husband who was completely bedridden for the last 22 months of his life, had to be put on the bedside commode every morning by a hired aide, so he could poop. It worked great, and his body got used to pooping in the mornings.

Are they completely bed bound? If not it might be helpful to sit on the commode for 10 - 15 minutes after meals (or whenever they usually go). Otherwise adult diapers, a disposable or washable bed pad and a leak proof mattress cover as well as lots of disposable gloves for the caregiver. There are also many kinds of peri washes and pre-moistened disposable wipes available to help with clean up.

My mom is completely bed bound now in hospice.

She uses diapers but if she can catch an aide in time she will use the bed pan too.
