This morning my mom (91) had black gunk on her lips. I guess it is dried blood. It comes off with a wash cloth. Anyone experience this?

Good questions, DeeAnna. I first thought it was dried blood, but your post alerted me to other possibilities.

Is the "black gunk" just on your Mom's lips or is it in her mouth also? On the pillow? How much--size of pin head, size of little finger nail, size of dime or nickel? Does the "black gunk" occur in the same spot on your Mom's lips every time? Does your Mom have cracked lips that are bleeding? Is your Mom taking a blood thinner like Coumadin (warfarin) or any of those medications for PE (pulmonary thrombosis) advertised on TV? Does the "black gunk" have a nasty odor to it? How often does it happen? If you put hydrogen peroxide on the black gunk on the wash cloth, does it foam up? I am just asking these questions to clarify what the "black gunk" might be and what is causing it.
