How do you get someone with stage 6 Alzheimer's to swallow pills?

cwillie Apr 2018
Overheard before supper at the nursing home.....

W, I've made some pudding and I wonder if you will taste it for me?

I don't know why you're asking me, I don't want to spoil my supper.

Oh please, just have a taste, I need to know if it turned out OK, please?

(accepts big spoonful) That's awful, you sure as h#ll can't cook!!

Yes, they put Moms pills in applesauce, yogurt, or pudding. Like said, not all pills can be crushed. Also like said, do they really need every pill.

I had to use a mortar and pedistal to crush my Wife's pills and mix that into her ice cream. She hates apple sauce and would find the small chunks of the pills and spit them out.

A lot of meds are available in liquid form or in tablet that dissolve under the tongue. Most pharmacists can do a compounded version of the medication if the doctor allows. If possible, you can crush up tablets and put them in applesauce (if they’re not capsules).

See if the pills can be crushed. You can put whole pills or crushed pills in a spoonful of applesauce or pudding.

Is person not wanting to swallow or unable to swallow? since you state stage 6 alzheimers.

Is person on many medications or just a few?

maybe a visit to the dr. to see if all medications are actually needed.

my dad used to take multivitamin plus an additional calcium. and those things were so big, I felt bad he had those on his list to take.
