Dad (91), with dementia. What is an hourly rate for a night shift of care; only awake for 3 hours?

He has caregivers 24/7. Yes, they have to sleep there, and help him go to bathroom at night. But he is happy, easy person to care for and they have no meals to prepare, no cleanup or laundry.

I think it is a little like being a security guard, 99% of the time nothing is happening, but they are still at work and still need to be paid. Or a sitter for your kids, you don't pay them less after the kids go to bed, you pay them for the hours they are there.

Wendall, when my Dad had 24 hour care, thus 3 shifts of caregivers from an Agency, Dad was charged the same hourly rate as the day shifts. In my area, the hourly rate was $30/hour for all shifts. These caregivers were well qualified.

Please note that it isn't easy to find an over-night caregiver. The Agency I used, the caregiver had to remain awake through his/her shift, so that they can listen for the client moving about. Thus, at the end of their shift, they go home to sleep during the day.

Some Agencies do charge more for night shift and for weekends, as those shifts are also difficult to fill.
