My 82-year-old dad conned the doctors into keep his drivers license! What can I do?

After an exhaustive process including physically taking his car from him & notifying Penndot in PA my father is still driving. He was not even required to take an actual drivers test behind the wheel just an eye test & Dr's visit. Of course he's become extremely secretive about everything he's doing - now that he's "on to us" as he puts it. He promised the sun & moon to get back behind the wheel including no night driving. One month in he gets in an accident at "dusk- no dad it was dark!" with a suspicious story. No one was hurt Thank God but we're back to square one. Any suggestions? He's a manipulative man who will say or do anything to bulldoze his way over people to get his way. We're headed to neurologist (8 month effort) to get formal vascular dementia diagnosis hoping it will be a help to get him off the road. I find it astounding the amount of energy needed by 5 adult children to get him to agree to anything

Take a copy of this to his new doctor. Some doctors assume that if the state sees fit to give an elderly person a drivers license, then it’s all good.
Doctors are held liable in PA.

Call the Area Agency on Aging. They may have suggestions about driving test. He should be seeing a geriatrician. Hopefully his new primary care is one. Call AARP, they may also driving assessments. Check online to see if there are stories, videos of t he consequences of driving elderly when they cause the death of a child or anyone for that matter.

I was fortunate. Mom recognized when she should not drive any more. She had stepdad to drive her everywhere and he enjoyed it. Stepdad worked for federal highways as a safety expert and recognized when he should stop driving. Perhaps PADOT can offer suggestions.

Thank you for answers. We increased his auto liability coverage to try to protect their finances. I now found out he switched primary DR'S behind our back. I wondered why i was getting tons of EOB's denying payments! We had told him we're having his original physician report him to penndot after his accident (mistake) - so he made his move. We have no relationship with this new office -he's blocked us from communicating with them (with HIPPA rules ) I'm told.
I was informed I can't even request referals. Fingers crossed he keeps the neurologist appt and we get some type of diagnosis that help us get him off the road. We're at our wit's end with him - he's the polar opposite of Mom who agreed she can't drive anymore easily. thanks for listening

I would think his doctor would be afraid of liability if he approves a dangerous person to continue driving. Man....I might see an attorney about getting Guardianship. At least, you can find out what evidence is needed, how the process works and what's involved. Hopefully, his doctor will be honest and cooperative and maybe, the Neurologist can offer some assistance.

Does he understand the financial consequences of an accident? Trial lawyers are hungry types and not easily ridden over. The thing is that depending on the circumstances of the accident/victims, there is a prejudice against elders driving that might well affect a jury - "Just another old guy who should have been taken off the road years ago." And just because you have insurance does not mean that it will cover everything. The high medical costs could easily exceed your coverage limits.
