Is there any way to speed up the pending process of waiting 6 months to get Medicaid?

JoAnn29 Sep 2017
I was told not to file until Mom had about two months of money. Once OKd you have 60 days to spend down the money and pick a NH and place them. With my Mom, she paid privately for two months and went right into Medicaid. I did work with a lawyer because Mom had a house. He and the Medicaid caseworker were a big help.

If your mother is living with Alzheimer's at home, can't you find a facility that will take her Medicaid pending? Or are you trying to get funding through a Medicaid community waiver for home care? Those waivers are long waiting lists and almost impossible to fast track. So many people needing help and scarce resources.

Medicaid is not a one time process. The initial application could take 3 - 8 months depending on how much backlog your state has. And most states have an annual recertification process as well. So it's continuous for record keeping.

Providing all documents requested will make the application sail through its review, but unless your state decides to spend more $ on Medicaid personnel, it will take the better part of a year. Now if there's a transfer penalty, that's required a different discussion....

If your family member on Medicaid is paying the required monthly co-pay each month and the dpoa keeps finances & legal organized, it's not bad if you pause the think of what the alternatives are.

Dear Laura,

I know its hard to wait. I found this information:

Once you apply for Medicaid, depending on your specific circumstances, it can take up to several weeks to process the Medicaid application. You can generally speed up your Medicaid application review process by making sure you completely fill out your application and include all required paperwork.
