What would happen to my mom's insurance policy if my dad passes and I only have POA for him?

I am taking care of my mom who has an Alzheimer's. My dad was recently diagnose with cancer. I have a power of attorney turned from my dad but what if my dad is not here anymore. What would happen to the insurance policy of my mom? The lawyer said that guardianship is the answer but I am really broke. I quit working because of my parents. Is there any other options?
