JenThomas, if you have a live-in caregiver or any caregivers who are "independent contractors" not from a licensed Agency, your Grandfather will need to pay for a "workman's comp" rider on his homeowners insurance because he now has "employees" working for him in his home. This is very important to have.
As for dispersing medicine, I know the Caregivers I had from a licensed Agency were not allowed to physically give my Dad his medicine. They could put the pills in a cup and it was up to my Dad to take the pills. Same happened when my Dad moved to Independent Living, unless he paid for a Med-tech who was certified to dispersing meds. It was well worth the cost as Dad had a bad habit of not taking his pills even when the Caregivers left him reminders.
My mother requires 24/7 companion and light care. It's costing over $10,000 a month. A quality Assisted Living Facility costs around $3600 and you can visit or stay overnight with them. They have company and a little social life and distractions away from themselves. Have you considered this?
Just an FYI as I'm not sure how much research you've done, but you'll probably need a crew of 2-3 live ins so they get days off to go home - you may not think so, but it's hard work especially if you want cooking and cleaning Depending on where you live it may cost you $175 / day
Does your grandfather live alone, though? Because his needs are going to increase, as I'm sure you know; and at some point they'll demand a lot more than light duties. I should also look ahead and see what options are available for him when he comes to need more support.
