How does someone become a certified caregiver?

Is there any state approved training?

LisaNJ Jul 2017
Community Colleges have programs and
some Long Term facilities have programs. In NJ we had to have classroom hours and clinical hours.

In Colorado...only certification is from the State Dept of Public Health...and only agencies can get that certification.

So, when the insurance company stated that they would only pay for caregivers that had certification...they were effectively saying I had to use and agency.

If the patient is on Medical then go through In Home Support Service, you can look them up under IHSS in your county. That's what they are called in California. Medical will pay for a caregiver or you can become the caregiver your self by going to orientation and having background done then they will pay you. I am my mother's caregiver

You might try calling some of the professional Caregiving Agencies and ask them what is required and how can you achieve that goal. And call your local county Agency on Aging to see if they have a list of schools you could attend. Some community colleges offer such a program.
