Is there a medication for fear?

Visited mil ( and FIL) yesterday. She has mid stage dementia. They are in a very caring skilled nursing care facility. They've been there a few months now. She has done well with proper care. Getting her thyroid medication and eating good meals not just sweets anymore. We have seen improvement in her behavior . She was treated for a UTI when she first entered which has calmed her violent behavior. The problem is that she cries a lot now and states she is afraid to be there. Her husband that is there is a grouchy toad and doesn't help calm her.i asked the nurse to talk to her Dr. about something to help her . Not sure if there is anything. The facility is 90 miles away so daily visits are out of the question. Her phone calls don't make much sense. Have you experience a similar situation and have suggestions or have LO on a successful medication? I feel sorry for her.

Sorry; I think Veronica and I are both trying to reassure you that if whatever meds are prescribed at first don't work, and the docs need to try to find the right combination, it is not evidence of incompetence on their part.

Some elderly folks metabolize drugs very differently from younger people and it takes a while to get both the proper med and the proper dosage adjusted. Just take heart; there ARE many meds out there to address this issue. Many folks with dementia feel this way and NOT just because they are in facilities; my mother's anxiety and dread were the main reasons she ended up no longer living at home.

Sorry Barbs advice is excellent there are so many meds out there that can cam her fears and possible depression. Living with a miserable old toad can make anyone depressed. it will be a question of finding a good balence which may take some experimentation.

Find out if there is a geriatric psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practices available at the facility. Many folks with dementia have anxiety, agitation and feelings of dread. My mother did ( and does, when they try to cut back on her meds). There are many meds, and it may take some experimenting to get the right combination for her. Take heart!
