Can my mom hire an independent or private nurse and have Mass health pay?

My mother needs skilled nursing in home. She has Medicare/Mass health.  What is the process for a private nurse to register as an independent mh provider and bill mass health?

No I don't dfeder57. Each state has their own programs and ways of doing things. Does your mother have a caseworker assigned to her? If so, I'd call that person. If not call an MH general information number, ask how you can get a needs assessment for your mother. They may work differently than I am familiar with, but eventually you'll be put through to someone who can help you!

Thankyou Jeanne. What mom needs is someone to come and set up TPN everyday and disconnect in the morning. So you say contact MassHealth directly? We have a private nurse now but paying a fortune. I heard that she can become a mh provider and MH will pay her rather than us. Do you have any knowledge abnlout this?

I believe MassHealth is what the state calls Medicaid. Medicaid often provides in-home health that will keep the person out of a nursing home.

MassHealth will need to evaluate your mother and determine what help she needs and is eligible for. In many states the department works with certain care agencies and arranges for the services needed through them. If you have particular nurse in mind, the department would ask her to register with their preferred agency, and she would be paid through them, with all the appropriate tax withholding, etc. At least that is how it works in Minnesota.

To get all this started, ask for a needs assessment from the MassHealth department -- or from Mom's case worker, if she has one.

If your mom needs around-the-clock skilled nursing, MassHealth would probably offer nursing home care instead.
