I am in the process of removing carpet and flooring. Is any of this tax deductible?

My husband recently died with dementia. He did not know where the bathroom was so went wherever.

Keep a record of all capital improvements. You use those to offset capital gains when you sell the house.

I doubt it, because it is your choice to update the carpet and flooring.   I can truly understand why you want to do this.

Now if you were selling your home, that could be deducted as a home repair in order to sell your house, but the sale has to be within a certain number of months.
