I got court-appointed guardianship of my mother in July '16. Is she a dependent on my federal tax return?

I got guardianship in mid-July 2016. She had advanced Alzheimers and is completely incapacitated. Can I place her as one of my dependents, along with my children, on my 2016 tax return?

I agree with FF; in general, you have to be paying at least half of a person's living expenses in order to claim them as a dependent. Are you paying for your mom's care, or is that being paid by her funds or by Medicaid?

I would recommend you talk with a CPA or someone who does income taxes as the IRS ruling are always changing.
