My loved one with Alzheimer's thinks a woman is saying bad things about him. How do I explain this?

My LO and I just returned home from a doctors visit. LO thinks this woman was saying bad things about him.  Explaining this away is probably not going to help him, right? Any other ideas out there> Diagnosis is Alzheimers - moderate stage.

All your answers are helpful. I was with him at the Drs. and we were addressing some troubling issues, Dr was making every effort to address LO directly and talk to both of us. However, when we left, LO revealed to me that he thought the Dr was saying he was bad. That was his interpretation!! Tough one, huh? So I've been reassuring him over and over that he is NOT bad, that the disease is causing the problems. Don't know how much of this he understands, but I don't want him to think of himself as bad. Does this sound like something out of a childhood of the 1940's?

I really like cwillie's answer. Don't argue but be reassuring.

Don't you attend doctor appointments with him?

I would just say something like"oh well, you know that's just the way doctors talk, always worrying about the worst thing that might happen. But she did help us with xxxx though, right?" And go on to reassure him that everyone is looking to help him be his best. And then change the subject if you can.

Who was "this woman" and what was she saying?

You are right, trying to explain to your love one the situation, when he has moderate stage of Alzheimer's, isn't going to work.
