Is there a rollator that uses the forearms instead?

I need to use a rollator but cannot use my hands to push it. I have RA (rheumatoid arthritis).

Marge, I think if you used your forearms, you would have to bend over, resulting in an uncomfortable posture and probably back pain.

I don't have anything to add to the already helpful posts except to confirm asking for a script for OT, and ask about the kind of braces that fit on arms and extend to the hands, the kind used by people with severe walking disabilities.

Think of people who had polio decades ago; I believe they used these kinds of braces.

Are you or your husband by any chance Veterans? From what I've read, a lot of advances have been made in prosthetics which could also be assistive; if you are Vets, the VA might have something to offer once you're qualified for medical assistance.

Do you know of any RA support groups, or associations, that might have the information you seek?

Excellent advice, cwillie, especially since this equipment is expensive.

I would strongly recommend going through an occupational therapist so you are fitted for what you really need.

There are some rollators, such as the Dolomite Alpha Basic and Advanced Walkers, that are made for people who cannot grip. They are pricey, though. I wondered if they have them for rent in medical supply stores that are Medicare-approved. Talk to your doctor about it to see if he will write a prescription. Many durable medical equipment can't be bought now under Medicare, but can be rented. I don't know about these walkers. Since the prices look like they are over $500, it might be helpful to check to see if there is a way to make one more affordable. The brakes are specially adapted so it doesn't require a person to grip them and you push with elbows and forearms.

I Googled "rollator forearm support" and found a number of different items. Give it a shot and hopefully you'll find what you need.
