Do some research of local companies that do provide medical transport. Sometimes they're called ambulettes. The charges are still expensive, they do have accommodations for people with restrictions, but I don't know for sure whether or not they would have the necessary level of support that would address your wife's conditions.

Also research paratransit services in your area.

The local Area Agency on Aging might also be able to provide some referrals.

I would also ask the staff of the specialists you're seeing, or ask if there's a social worker with the hospital with which they're affiliated. They might have some suggestions.

Medical, nonambulance transit in this area can be about $40/hour, expensive, but not as much as you've been paying.
