Should my mother keep her supplemental insurance?

Medicare supplemental insurance vs medicare-medicaid "Medi-medi" My elderly mother has medicare and a supplemental insurance that cost her $220 a month. She has no assets and only draws $1200 in Social Security. She has no other source of income. We are at the point that she needs to go to a personal care home. Should she continue to pay for the supplemental insurance or go full medicaid? Thanks in advance for any info.

Not sure supplemental insurance is worth it if you have Medicaid. I think Medicaid will pick up what Medicare did not cover. My dad no longer got bills with copays or had to pay for meds once he had Medicaid.

If she is going to keep the supplemental insurance maybe you can look for something that is cheaper, maybe with a slight deductible. In her case it seems like medicaid would be the way to go.

Thanks, Pamstegma. It only covers so many days of at a Skilled Nursing ...which the doctor has to order and he won't do it because he said he can't order her to the hospital unless it for an "acute" reason.

What I am trying to figure out at this point is does it make sense to keep the supplement since she is eligible for medicaid too. Is she just throwing her $220 per month away or is it covering something that medicaid won't?

Read your policy carefully. It may not cover a "care home", especially a small one with no license.
