How do I apply for in home assistance?

I am a disabled senior who is looking to get some assistance in paying my landlady for taking care of me as I am a disabled senior in receipt of old age assistance and a small pension from WCB.

There are Medicaid long term programs that allows you to hire whomever you like to take care of you. In Florida for elderly it is called participant directed option, use to be called consumer directed plus. The federal law calls it self directed. Check with your state for the program name.

It's complicated paying someone for your care--after a certain amount you become their employer and you will be responsible for doing their taxes as an employer. Unless you pay them under the table cash. However, if they slip and fall in your house they can technically sue you..it rarely happens but it can.

If care is "medically necessary" and you have a doctor's order, then Medicare will pick up some of the bill, however, you will have to pay the other 20% unless you have other insurance. If your landlady is truly acting as your caregiver, perhaps she can claim you on her federal income taxes. You might check with your Area on Aging, churches, and other resources for help. Best wishes!
