Are there any tax breaks for caregiving of a spouse with Alzheimer's?

Are there any tax breaks for care giving of a spouse with Alzheimers.  He can no longer work; he was 65 when he had to quit work; is 66 now. He does receive SS part A & B. He attends Day Care 6 times a month (which I* pay for) and he has a Life Alert system. I also have an FSA account through my work which he uses for prescriptions and doctor appointments. My 97 yr old mother also lives with us. I handle our finances, my mother's and my mother-in-laws, who is in a nursing home.

Go to IRS.gov and then look under "Family Caregivers and Self Employment Tax."

I believe your 97 mother would be a dependent, but contact the IRS to make sure (or whomever does your taxes). If you do your own, then you can go to irs.gov and get answers online. Typically, you do not get compensated for caring for a spouse.

Your best bet is to contact a professional who does income taxes to find out the current tax deductions for care giving. Or you can contact the IRS Hotline.
