Mom has probiotics, but can't swallow capsules. Anyone know if it's okay to open and put in yogurt?

Everyone else had such good comments. I just wanted to add that I believe there are some probiotics that come in powdered form now, in packets. Are yours a prescription or OTC? After you answer the questions above, perhaps you can find a powdered one that meets your needs!

Not sure if it would be helpful, but I saw probiotics in Gummy Bear form at Walgreen's yesterday. They are for kids, but if they are the right ones and mom can handle gummies, it might be an option?

While it is true that the colony number of bacteria and viability need to survive the acid and bilious environment in the upper GI tract before they reach the small intestine and colon, the quality and content of probiotics is not regulated. Only a registered dietician in combination with her doctor can help your mother. Ask her doctor to give you a referral to an RD. Even probiotics have side effects.

The main problem with probiotics is that each different type is intended for different portions of the digestive system. For example, the brand with the pearl capsule is intended not to open until it reaches the large intestine. By opening the encapsulation, you ensure that the bacteria is exposed in the stomach ... but many need to remain protected until they are further in the digestive system. I would say in general, probiotics need to remain in their encapsulation for best results. The active cultures in yogurt are considered less effective than the capsules or pearls for this very reason, as they rarely survive beyond the stomach.

First you need to find the right probiotics. Formulas and yogurts are all different. Just because a probiotic says "1 gazzilion live cultures" on the label doesn't mean that 1. it does or 2. that it's the right formulation for your mom. I would take her to a registered dietician. Doctors are pretty useless when it comes to diet. That's what the field of nutrition is all about. First though I would find a yogurt that does the job and save the probiotics for when she really needs it. But I see no reason why you cannot open a capsule into yogurt.

Speak to a pharmacist or a Dr. first.

Get yogurt that already contain probiotics
