At what financial point do I begin the Medicaid application?

Is the Medicaid look back for charitable gifts 5 years in Ohio?   I am caregiver for a person who has an IRA with our church as beneficiary. The person can self pay for the next 3 or 4 years and I am hoping to give the church the IRA now. Also how much money should the nursing home patient spend down to before I apply for medicaid? IE at what monetary point do I begin the application process?

Each state in different, here in Arkansas Medicaid will go back 5 yrs. I agree with the other ladies do not make any donations or give money away. Your IRA and any life insurance polices that have cash value is consider an asset. Please consult a Medicaid official.

Please, please, PLEASE consult a certified eldercare attorney. Medicaid laws vary from state to state.
