Looking into respite for Mom. Anyone know if Hospice will help pay?

Hello everyone, as many of you know I help my sister care for my mom every week. I just found out I am going to have to have surgery in about a month and so my sister and I have decided to put mom in respite while I recover. Does anyone have experience with hospice respite? Do they help pay for some of the cost? I am just trying to get thing lined up and will be calling my Area Agency on Aging on Monday but I know the forum has a lot of good insite so I thought I would check to see what you all had to say on the subject. And just so you know bringing in outside caregivers won't work because truefully my sister needs a break as well. Thanks for listening and for you help.

I'm pretty sure that for Medicare respite benefit to be paid they have to already be on hospice. So if mom isn't approved and on hospice, no Medicare paid respite stay.

Now the facilities that take in Medicare paying respite will also do private pay respite stays. They pay a daily room & board rate with an ADL staffing surcharge and Medicare & their secondary health insurance paying for medical needs. In my city, there is a NH that markets themselves for families who need respite care on a regular basis or special events (like family need to go out of state for a wedding so grannie goes to Fernwood for a week). It's not cheap but the good part is that IF something comes up staff is there to deal with it and you could find that your elder likes the place and you have found a facility to move her too!

You know so often it's the caregivers themselves needing care that is the tipping point for having the elder finally move into a facility.

Gladimhere, thanks for the link. Looks like once u sign up for hospice your regular medical coverage stops so I guess mom is not ready for hospice. Someone on another forum said her mom was in hospice even though she was not end of life so I thought maybe it would help us out, but after reading that info I think I'm going to have to go a different route. That info was very helpful. Ruth Anne

I will check it out. Thanks again. Mom's finances are so tight but we have to use respite while I'm recovering so I'll check into getting her in a hospice care plan.

See this link. It sounds like it has to be in the hospice care plan. Get it added asap.

I hope that is correct. Once you find out, please let us know.

Thank you for the input. I appreciate it.

I think that Medicare will pay for respite when someone is in hospice. Get it preauthorized by your Mom's doc.
