What meds can I get for my Dad?

Hello my Dad is almost 80 years old and he has dementia I have been taking care of him for the past 10 years. I have MS and it is getting very hard. We both have good days and bad days. I need to know if there is any kind of medicine that I can get for him that will help him sleep and will also help his moods. He gets very angry at night. Sometimes it gets to the point that he starts screaming and slamming doors I dont know how much more I can take. Some one please help me.

Yes, take Dad to the doctor. Is there any family available to help with your decisions? Your situation is a lot of stress to absorb. Perhaps a social worker will provide excellent advise.

Definitely take him to the doctor and explain what is going on. Contact your local area agency on aging and ask about in home programs that will assist you in the care of your dad.

It sounds like he has sundowners, the doctor can prescribe medication that can help to control these.

Yes if he is your father, you don't need to worry about paying for it. They will use his funds and then medicaid. His dementia is causing a lot of stress for you and probably making your MS worse. You need to get him into care and get out of this for the sake of your own health. Everybody keeps asking me, "How are YOU doing?" when I take my husband to the doc. We have to take care of ourselves in order to take care of the patient. In your case, you really need to think about yourself . MS is a very difficult disease and stress makes it so much worse!

Yes, take him to see his doctor. The type of dementia can help determine what medications might help. You don't mention what resources he has, but it also sounds like you need to start thinking about the possibility that he needs to be placed in a memory care unit.
