My Mom's in a dementia care facility. Are there expenses that can be written off on her income tax - monthly rent, personal care charges?

I have dementia - mid range. The funny thing is I have always worked for physicians - either as their Office Mgr. or Financial Mgr. The first thing I noticed was me trying to overpay for things - thank goodness the people were honest. They stopped me from driving about 3 yrs. ago, my neurologist and I agree I am further along than we had thought. My husband took early retirement to be with me, take me to Dr. appt. I guess my question, he is on medicare and BC/BS, that is what I have. Can he get more money for taking care of me? Will I be able to find a decent nursing home with my insurance? At what point should I prepare to go? Thanks for listening.

Blade, a substantial portion of the AL costs for memory care are deductible. See the marketing person at your Mother's facility. They typically have information on this. Most of the memory care facilities near me are 'private pay' only. I did find one that would take medicaid after 2 full years of private care.

There is financial assistance for Veterans (who qualify) and their spouses. If you think your Mom may qualify, enter that in the search button on this site to get more info. And speaking to the marketing person at your Mom's facility should get more information as well. Otherwise, you may need to locate a nursing home that accepts medicaid patients ... a good majority of them do. It's never to early to start searching for the one you think best meets her needs. Call your county office of aging for a list of those near your home and set up appointments. Most want private pay for some period of time before the medicaid effective date. AND applying for Medicaid takes time too. Good luck
