When will Medicaid cover a nursing home?

Will they cover full or part-time care for an elderly person at home? Does the person need to be destitute before Medicaid will cover any of this? Would they lose their home?

Contact your local Area Agency on Aging, they will have information you can use. While each state is different, if someone is in a nursing home, not skilled/medicare then if they qualify for Medicaid (because of income/assets) Medicaid will pick up; the person pays most of their income to the nursing home to help cover the cost. If a person is on a Medicaid waiver, then it may cover in home assistance and Medicaid will cover the cost. The AAA will be able to give you the options in your state.

Well, when my friend put her mom in a nursing home, she found herself getting behind on payments and they said they would buy her mom's home. That seemed like a conflict of interest.

Every state is different, but in North Carolina ncdhhs.gov/dma/medicaid/
Medicaid may help pay for nursing homes and intermediate care facilities, as well as long-term care in the home. There are income limits, resource limits and transfer of asset requirements. You do not have to sell your house. The home, a car and all personal possessions are not countable resources.
