My parents will be moving to a new location. How will this affect my Dad (84) with Alzheimer's disease?
Will a move to a different house have a negative effect on my father. My mother is worried that this could happen and things could get worse than they are with my father.
The urge to move is often a sign of depression, an effort to get away from problems. Get mom in for a check-up and maybe some meds. The move will be detrimental for Dad and he will be agitated.
Generally it is hard for persons with dementia to learn new things. Finding his way around the new home may take a long time to learn. Often new environments are very confusing and seem to cause at least temporary declines.
But sometimes moves are necessary or for the best. If he is moving with your mother that will be one constant in his life, and if she is patient and understanding that will help tremendously.
As freqflyer says, dementia progresses. Does a move cause it to progress faster? Maybe. But not necessarily. Take each day as it comes. Love and reassure Dad.
Reaching22, sadly with Alzheimer's things will get worse whether the move affects the disease or not. Hopefully the move will help your Mother be able to give your Dad better care.
