I started as soon as I found out my husband was drsining. The bank account and withdrawing his whole retirement monies..went to the primary dr first..then the pshychiatrist who diagnosed with both dementia and Altzheimers. .then the hospitals social worker..then our towns elder serbice the n the VNA visiting nurse assoc....now we are on medicaid...we now have home services meals on wheels..meds delivered from pharmacy. .housekeeping twice per wk..nxt step w be a nursing home since it has become too much for me to live with..all of these prople help put it all together

Absolutely agree with Shelby...find an eldercare attorney who understands the Medicaid process. Start looking at li cal nursing hones to get a feel for what you like and get mom on waiting listsm

Hi donnapage- I'm sure this is a very tough time for you. I agree with the last reply that speaking with her doctor is a great place to start. I would also recommend identifying and reaching out to an elder services agency in whatever state you are in- they should be able to assign a caseworker to your mom and will help you and your family determine the exact level of care needed and what services might be available to help you take care of her- a nursing home may be one option but there are other options to consider if it is at all feasible that she remain at home with help. Lastly, I would highly recommend retaining an experienced elder care attorney to help you make sure everything is in order and again, that your mom is getting every service she deserves. Although the attorney will charge a fee, I found in my own experience that his expertise saved me thousands of dollars on the back end and it was worth every penny.
