If wife owns primary residence and husband never was on the deed, can she sell property and purchase smaller home with Medicaid?

If the wife owns the primary residence and her husband has never been on the deed, can she sell said property and purchase a smaller home and keep the money left from the sale of her property or will Medicaid claim the money after the sale?
