I'm the caregiver for my Mom in which my husband and I live with her. Can I claim her on my taxes?

She is on Medicaid she does pay for her own bills. I buy the groceries and do your home repairs, cook, yard work and anything else needed. I do not want to do anything that would cause her to lose her Medicaid or cause a problem with my siblings. Please give me an answer because my one sister is saying that i am being unethical and I do not want to be unethical in any way. Thank you so much for your help.

This is a difficult question. You can claim someone as a dependent if you provide at least half their care. However, you live in her house. I don't know how financial weight that would carry. Another thing I would worry about is if claiming her as a dependent would make your income the one considered for Medicaid. I would ask a professional about these things before I would do it. Getting an extra deduction wouldn't be worth it if her Medicaid was jeopardized.
