I do not claim my elderly mother as my dependent, but I do a lot of driving to take her to doctor appointments. Would this be a deduction?

She lives about 50 miles away, and I need to pick her up and take her to doctors near me several times a month. I'd like to know whether the mileage would be a legal tax deduction for me.

Publication 503 (2013) states you can deduct either the cost of gas and oil or the standard mileage rate of 24 cents a mile for the cost of transporting a parent by a child for medical care. The deduction falls under medical expenses on Schedule A Itemized Deductions. You can deduct medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year.
