What can be done about crusty eyes?

Alz husband lays in bed about 23 hours a day, on his back. One eye waters alot, running onto his cheek sometimes. Doesn't take long to dry , but then it takes a little effort to get the crust off his lashes and lids. He is unable to communicate in anyway. I dont want to hurt him. Anything to prevent this? Anything to make cleaning a little easier on him? Any over the counter products?

Yes over the counter eye drops will help. Bear in mind that he is at risk for pinkeye, so if you see yellow pus-like ooze, call the MD for help. Wash your hands and his as well. Eye crust can be a sign of dehydration, so check for dehydration by gently pinching up the skin on the back of his hand. Normally hydrated skin will immediately flatten back out. If it stays up in a little peak, or goes back down slowly, more than 3 seconds, he is dehydrated. Again, you call the MD. At his present state, he should have a visiting nurse at least once a week. His doctor would order that, and Medicare should cover it.
