I have moved into my parents home to care for both. They give me $2k monthly. Do I pay taxes on this?

They want to claim me a dependent. I need health care coverage in CA, I moved from TX where I did have coverage through work. Will being their dependent on taxes hurt my chances for financial assistance? Most of the money given to be is being used to cover bill's in TX. My son is unemployed & I still pay rent & misc bills in Texas. I don't want to cut him off.
Should I pay taxes and SS on the money they give me, then file on my own like an independent contractor?

I don't see how they can pay you $24K and claim you as a dependent. I don't see where you would qualify for any kind of assistance since you have both a healthy income and free room and board. Your son needs to manage his own affairs. Cut him off. Clearly you expect your parents to support you and your son plus you want some sort of public assistance.
I would suggest you see a psychiatrist to sort out an ongoing co-dependency. Your parents won't live forever; you need to find ways to support yourself and cut the son's umbilical cord. The scenario you describe is absolutely destructive on many levels.
