I'm not quite old enough for Medicare, but I found a walker at my local thrift store for $6 - brand new, with tags still on it.

My mother's doctor wrote her a prescription for a power chair and ramp. She got them with Medicare, which covered all of the cost.

www.ramps.org has a list of free ramps programs by state. Look at that, and contact your local Area Agency on Aging. Good luck!

The doctor can write an order for a walker and Medicare/Insurance will cover it. A physical therapist should be involved in recommending the type and adjusting it to the correct height. A PT will also give a lesson in how to use it correctly.

When my dad lived with me we needed railings going down 3 steps into our garage so my dad could get down the stairs. Someone suggested to me that I call the Americans with Disabilities folks and I did and they came out and put up 2 handrails for my dad. They used wood from some other project and didn't charge me a dime.
