Has anyone sought a companion for their parent? How has it worked out?

I don't live in NY so I can't comment on your region. But I can answer in the general sense. Unfortunately, getting a companion for my mom did not work. It turned into a big mess with lawyers involved. My advice is to be very careful as you would with anybody coming into your home. Make sure you have a good relationship with your loved one and keep an eye on both of them. I hope it works out for you and your parent because it could be a godsend if its a good "fit".
