My 85 year old mother's mild cognitive impairment seems to be getting worse. Should I call the doctor?

She is exhibiting some delirium/paranoia. Lately she had accused different friends and family members of stealing things from her, like credit cards, her driver's license, cell phone, tools, etc. She has an appointment with her doctor in 3 weeks. Should I try to call her doctor (or the doctor's nurse) and share some of my concerns and observations ahead of time? She is currently living by herself in her own home. She is still driving. She seems to still be OK in daily tasks. But I am scared of where she is headed.

Keep a journal of "odd" behaviors for the next two weeks, then distill it into a list and fax it to the doctors office a few days before the appointment. We know far more about our loved ones than a doctor who seems them only for a few minutes at a time can detect. A broader picture will help with the diagnosis.

I think it would be smart to alert the doctor before your visit. My concern would be her driving...that is a lot of responsibility.

Good luck!

im inclined to agree with someones observation on here the other day. they said that a hospital will dx everyone who walks thru the door with dementia till they get the federal money for a new dementia wing. old people get soft in the head but a whole industry is springing up around it.. hell im paranoid and delirious at 54.. docs wont give me any meds theyre afraid i might enjoy them.. life aint fair.
