My fiance was appointed POA for his mother. What expenses is he responsible for?

My fiance was appointed POA for his mother before she passed away. She was in a nursing home a short period of time. He is now being presented with bills for nursing home expenses. She also signed a life policy over for funeral expenses to the funeral home. Later after the funeral they presented my fiance with a $1500 bill for expenses after being told everything was covered. What exactly is he responsible for?

The POA dies with the person, and even if she were alive, the POA isn't responsible for debts. If he is executor of the estate, then he is responsible for paying her bills from her assets.
However, if the funeral home says the funeral cost more than the policy covered, you'll have to take that issue up with them. There should be some papers from when she signed over the policy that state whether or not that amount was to cover all expenses. If not, the family may need to pay the rest. To my knowledge, this gets down to the terms of the contract with the funeral home. Good luck,
Carol
