Can my mother still qualify for Independent Living if her house was recently foreclosed?

EXPERT Carol Bradley Bursack, CDSGF Feb 2010
You'd probably have to see an attorney for this. No doubt her finances are complicated and there's no easy answer. Please do check with an attorney. You can call your State Bar Association for a reference.

I don't know if I am allowed to jump in here or not? However I did have a home pretty far out in the country and up a lane with a hill. I stayed alone there after my spouse died for 6 years. My daughter and grandchildren had been there, but I was so tired of her cussing me and running my home. She drinks like a fish and can be very very mean. She could never hold a job. (Always started out so well, but then was fired, or quit for call offs ;'Hang-overs' )
I was fine without her, but she has hated me for evicting her. I never asked her to move in nor did I want her too. My spouse was sick with throat cancer, and sometimes at night if I needed her I feared she would come up stairs drunk. I took myself to and from chemo/rads everyday. That last week I did not think I would make it and was hospitalized to try and fix a chemo caused problem. The hospital found out I was alone, called the senior services here in this town and they came out. Then they had to get a judge to order me to a in town living community.
It is beautiful and my neighbors are nice. The downsizing is nice (Now) I live alone and do fine! I go to the store, shopping, drive and yes my home is in foreclosure. My daughter has improved, but she still drinks and I don't want her here because she drinks all night and sleeps all day and sometimes even stays awake (drunk and mean)
I see no reason your mother cannot live independently if she can afford the rent.
Sometime they even help with the rent to certain seniors. They prefer we live independently if we can.

Some cities have non-profit legal aide organizations For example, Los Angeles has "Bet Tzedek," which receives funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Their telephone number is (323) 939-0506.
